Tentative publication date: August 2008

Hi all,

I'm working on a Corel Painter book entitled
"Painting for Photographers."

I wrote the manuals for the first several versions
of Painter, and I've written 3 Painter books for past
versions published by other publishers.

My Painter books were very well-respected and
used in many schools as textbooks.

For many reasons, I stopped writing Painter books and
instead turned to publishing my own tutorials digitally.

And now, I'm planning to self publish a new Painter book.

And I can do it, if you preorder the book.

It will have the art concepts and Painter steps for
turning photos into paintings, like my digital tutorials.

Only it will be a printed four-color book with
written steps and illustrations.

I'm currently offering a pre-publication price of $25,
not including tax (California residents), shipping and handling.

I'm anticipating having the book available by August 2008, after
I write it, illustrate it, lay it out and have it printed.

Everyone always asks me when I'm going to do a Painter book.

Well, I'd like to, now.

Would you like to help me do it?

I could, of course, do print on demand.

However, the per-book price would be more
expensive than $25.

That's why I'm asking everyone to pre-order,
so that I can do a big print run, and offer
you a great book at a low price.

It doesn't seem odd to me to invite people
to preorder.

I ask people to preorder my Artistry Tips and Tricks
newsletter by inviting them to subscribe--you're
ordering a year's worth of issues in advance.

So to me, inviting everyone to preorder my
book in advance is the same thing.

I'm asking during the writing process
because I want to have the money in hand
when I'm ready to send to a printer.

If I created the book first, and then asked for the
printing money, then we'd be sitting around waiting
till I had the money to print.

This way, I'm writing, and collecting money, and when
the book is ready, then off it will go to the printer!

It seems logical to me to invite people to preorder a
Painter book from me, it's not like I've never written
about Painter before--I've written 3 Painter books,
several Painter manuals, and a couple of Painter
newsletters, in addition to articles for professional
photographer magazines.

That's 17 years of non-stop experience writing about
Painter, longer than anyone out there--I wrote the
first manual, no one else can say that.

We're in a new world where publishing paradigms are
changing by the second. I'm using a little out-of-the-box
thinking to get a Painter book out there in answer to all
the people who have asked me to.

Here's what someone who just preordered my book wrote to me:

"I agree with asking for the payment up front. You do that
for your workshops, and I do it for ALL my photo sessions,
so why not for a book? It's logical, but such a new concept--
thanks to desktop publishing and the internet--that people
are slow to think it through. Who knows; maybe you've
invented a new way of doing business. One of the very
interesting considerations when studying cultural changes
brought about by the internet and the digital age."

Here are some more examples of the feedback I've been getting:

"I'm all excited about a new book. Love the tutorials.
I doubt you will have a problem getting enough pre-orders.
Good luck."

"I'm in!! Sending a $1 more just in case. You are an amazing
teacher (someday I'll find that out in person) and I am
100% behind this book. I feel privileged to be included
in the book's development."

"Hi Karen, thanks for doing the book.
Looking forward to hearing that the endeavor is
successful.
Best of luck."

"Hi Karen--
I'm sending your check immediately. I know
the book will be wonderful.
You know what this means--- book signings on
the east coast--can't wait!!!
Best wishes ---"

"I know I would love your book before
it's even published!! Count me in."

"Yes I would buy it. I enjoyed your class and
am not doing what I would like to with it."

"Absolutely! I'd be delighted to have a copy."

"I love your idea and I would like to help you complete
this project. Count me in as willing to prepay."

"Dear Karen,
This is a great idea.
I love your tutorials and certainly your book is going
to be great. Thanks for letting me participate in your book."

"WOW Karen, that would kick ass! I would love to buy a
Painter book from you.. Looking forward to this book.."

"Great News, Karen! I am in! You have my support, my order and
any assistance that I can offer. I will be calling you with my
credit card info."

"Wrote you a check this evening... so, it should be on the way to
CA in the morning via snail mail. I have my fingers crossed and
hope other Painter enthusiasts help you to achieve your self-
publishing goal. Best wishes on your endeavor."

"You are most welcome. I learned so much from you in the
Artistry Retreat--you ROCK!!"

"Definitely Karen.
I have not been able to schedule the Artistry Retreat yet,
but will be able to do so some time next year (2008) and
I know I will love to have a book. AND I want to support you.
I'm mailing a check to you. Good Luck!"

"Sounds like a good deal to me. I'm in."

"I am sending you $32 through paypal for your new
unpublished book! I really like your style of teaching and
am eager to see it in print."

"Good luck with the book, Karen.
Thanks for including me in the project.
Looking forward to the results."

"Hi Karen,
Payment enclosed for book. Please mail to the address
below when the big day arrives.
Hope you have fun putting your book together!"

"Karen,
Let me know if this gets there ok...it is more than
the price to help with publishing, or to help someone
else get a copy, or shipping or whatever....hugs, ...thank
you for being you..."

"Hi Karen, I am so glad that you are publishing a book on
Painter. I am going to pre order. I will go to your website
tomorrow and do it. Cant wait to get it. Thank you!"

"Karen, I just ordered the book on PayPal. I can't wait to get it.
You are awesome. Thank you."

"I look forward to your new book venture and its instructions for
photographers. I hope you go heavy on landscape photopainting advice."

"Good luck on the book adventure, Karen."

"Hi Karen,
Wanted you to know that I submitted prepayment
for your book via the PayPal link on your web site.
I am really looking forward to receiving it (in 6 months
or so). I enjoy your newsletter every month. Best regards."

"Dear Karen,
Here is the promised money for your new book. It's a very
exciting project and I can't wait to see it."

"Karen,
I just ordered your book.
Even though I'm an artist and not a photographer,
I have learned so much from you over the years that
I'm sure to learn wonderful things in your new book."

"I have several of your lessons and really like them.
I'm looking forward to the book."

So I am moving forward, and posting this information
here on my web site!

As I mentioned, the pre-publication price is $25 not including tax
(California residents), shipping and handling.

$32 should cover everything for the U.S, except California (tax).

$34 should cover everything for California, including tax.

$41 should cover everything International.

These are estimates, and the book will probably be more when
it's finally ready. So you can look at preordering as getting
a discount because you will lock in the above prices and
any increases won't affect you.

The book will be out August 2008 if everyone pays now---
after I write it, illustrate it, lay it out and have it printed.

Please note: If I don't do the book, I will send your money back.

The only reason I wouldn't do the book is if I don't get enough of
you to pay for the printing.

But judging from the excitement I've been seeing so far about this
book, I think it looks very good that I will be able to get it printed,
but I need your help!

If you are interested in getting a book with my tutorials, images and
techniques, then please join me in my self-publishing effort by
sending in a payment now.

A little more about what Painting for Photographers by

oils and watercolors

*Information for painting portraits and landscapes

like a photo but with painted touches

*Special tips and techniques about painting for photographers
that I use from my 17 years of Painter experience like how
to paint crisp edges and how to know what brushes to use

marketing photos and paintings to portrait clients and to other
art and photography markets

My Painter book will have easy to follow written instructions and
interim images.

It won't have long-winded off-topic prose.

It won't be a Painter manual. And it won't be a computer book.

It will be an art book, for photographers.

So don't put it off, send in your payment, and let's do a
Painter book together!

If you wait, then the price may be more than $25 if I have
to go the print on demand route!

So preorder and help me publish "Painting for Photographers,"
