Artistry Crowdfunding

Support Free and Low-Cost Corel Painter and Photoshop CS5 Learning Materials

Karen Sperling would like to offer free and low-cost Artistry classes, tutorials, videos, webinars, brushes and other training materials for turning photos into paintings in Corel Painter and Photoshop CS5.

And now free and low-cost learning tools can be made available through the support of crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding FAQ

What is Crowdfunding

According to a recent post at Bloomburg.com, crowdfunding is defined as "people pooling their money together, via the Internet, to support the efforts of other people. It has been used for a variety of things from disaster relief to citizen journalism to political campaigns. Crowdfunding can replace specialized grant applications and traditional fundraising with a more casual, yet powerful, approach based on the wisdom of the crowd."

Why is Artistry seeking Crowdfunding

To offer free content, web sites count on advertising, sponsorship and venture capital. Monied organizations doing this sort of investment look for the Facebooks, Twitters and Youtubes of the world, with millions of audience members to whom they can promote their products and services.

Sadly, the Painter or Photoshop communities aren't as big as the audiences for these general interest web sites, and the Painter community, which is Artistry's biggest audience at the moment, is far smaller than the Photoshop user base. As a result, these corporate funding opportunities aren't available to the Artistry web site.

The question, then, is how to offer free and low-cost Painter and Photoshop information at the Artistry web site on an ongoing basis without the benefit of advertising, sponsorship or venture capital funds.

The answer is crowdfunding.

What Could Artistry Offer for Free through Crowdfunding

Painter and CS5 Tutorial Movies

This is an example of the kinds of videos that could be offered for free on an ongoing basis.

Painter and CS5 Artistry Tips and Tricks Acrobat downloads

With crowdfunding, excerpts from Artistry Tips and Tricks ezine could be offered for free, and ideally, with enough crowdfunding, the subscription price could be lowered and eventually the ezine could be offered for free!

Painter and CS5 brushes

Free brushes for Painter and Photoshop CS5 could be offered on an ongoing basis.

For example, here are some Painter brushes.

To download the first Painter brush, which is a watercolor brush available on the Artistry Bonus CD, click here.

To install the brush in Painter:

Shut down Painter, open the zip file and put the .jpg file and folder in the following location, depending on your operating system.

When you move the file and folder inside the Painter Brushes folder, the brush will become a part of the current library in the Brush Selector.

Mac
Users -> [User Name] -> Library -> Application Support -> Corel -> Painter (X or 11) -> [Workspace Name or Default] -> Brushes ->Painter Brushes
Windows
Documents and Settings -> [User Name] -> Application Data -> Corel -> Painter (X or 11) -> [Workspace Name or Default -> Brushes ->Painter Brushes
Windows Vista
Users -> [User Name] -> AppData -> Roaming -> Corel -> Painter (X or 11) -> [Workspace Name] -> Brushes ->Painter Brushes

Painter and CS5 Webinars

Webinars could be offered, including downloads for those unable to attend during the live session.

Painter and CS5 Experimental Movies

Painter has movie tools and with the popularity of software like imovie, a growing number of people are asking about painting movies in Painter.

Crowdfunding would allow Karen Sperling to post experiments and tutorials like this one.

Click here for more examples of experimental Painter movies.

Painter and CS5 Blogs

Karen Sperling's blogs about the pursuit of painting, photography and art have been receiving rave reviews. With crowdfunding, she could write more blogs more often.

Here are some examples of her blogs.

Painter and CS5 Articles

Crowdfunding would make it possible to offer more articles on the Artistry web site.

Karen Sperling started out as a journalist, which is how she got the gig to write the first Painter manual. Click here to read the whole story.

Karen has written many articles for Professional Photographers magazine and Rangefinder in addition to the articles in Artistry Tips and Tricks.

What Could Artistry Offer for Reduced Prices through Crowdfunding

Painter and CS5 Books

Karen Sperling's book, Painting for Photographers, is regarded as one of the best books ever covering painting photos in Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop.

It's currently sold out and new copies are on order. Also, the book needs to be updated to include information for CS5.

Karen Sperling self-published Painting for Photographers by choice to control the content without having to report to editors at book publishing companies who aren't as closely involved with the readers as Karen is, and her efforts paid off with a book that many treasure.

Karen did all the jobs of a publishing company for Painting for Photographers herself, including writing, designing, laying out, illustrating, copyediting, proofreading, data base maintaining, hiring of printers, and in many instances, packaging and mailing. All of this takes time and needs to be funded in addition to the printing of the books.

Karen's happy to create more tutorial books, but needs help with the funding of these projects while keeping the cover price low.

Click here for information about the Painting for Photographers book.

Painter and CS5 DVDs

Karen Sperling's first Painting for Photographers DVD also received rave reviews.

She'd love to offer more DVDs but in addition to the time it takes to make them including the writing and storyboarding of scripts, illustrating, recording, editing, designing bonus materials and choosing music, there's the cost of duplicating and packaging.

Crowdfunding would help to make DVDs available and at a lower price.

Click here for information about the Painting for Photographers DVD.

Painter and CS5 Classes

Many organizations offer low-priced classes because everyone who attends pays membership fees that offset the costs of the classes.

Crowdfunding would help offset the cost of classes and lower the price of Artistry Retreats.

Click here for information about the Artistry Retreats.

What Is Your Crowdfunding Target Amount

It is typical for crowdfunded projects, particularly movies, to announce a target because they have a fixed budget for one thing, a movie.

In Artistry's case, there is no target. Crowdfunding is being sought for ongoing products and services and basically, every little bit helps. The more money is raised, the more free and low-cost products and services that can be added to the Artistry web site.

In the case of movies, sometimes if the target isn't reached, the movie isn't made, depending upon whether the movie has other revenue sources. Since Artistry is already operating, the crowdfunding will immediately be put to good use the moment it starts to arrive.

How is Your Crowdfunding Going?

It's going great! Here's the kind of feedback I've been receiving:

Crowdfunding is a Terrific Idea!
Hi Karen,
I've taken the plunge & bought Painter 11. I wouldn't have done it
if you hadn't pointed out the Corel sale.
Contributing to your crowdfunding is the least I could do to thank
you for that.
Much luck with your crowdfunding. It's a terrific idea!

Artistry a Big Help
Hi Karen,
I just made a small donation to your crowdfunding because you have been
such a big help in improving my Painter technique over the last year.
I really hope that you can hang in there and continue to publish your
helpful articles and tutorials like you have done in the past.
